Description

What does the cross of Hermes represent?

Origin: Winged staff of the Greek god Hermes.

Meanings as talisman or amulet: Healing energies; physical and spiritual health

The caduceus was a symbol of trade and is associated with the Greek god Hermes (who became Mercury for the Romans). It is currently often used interchangeably with the staff of Asclepius, associating the caduceus with medicine, especially in the United States. The symbol is instead used in Italy as an emblem of the Order of Pharmacists. Historically, the two symbols had distinct meanings.
It was ordinarily a herald’s staff, sometimes with wings, with two white ribbons attached. Over time the ribbons became snakes, in the shape of eight.
The caduceus was the sacred staff or scepter of the Greek god Hermes, who exhibited it as a symbol to settle quarrels, since this stick was the physical manifestation of the “Balance” that had to be in all things. Hermes / Mercury, as messenger of the gods, was also the mediator of the divine will among men. For this caduceus-like sticks were shown by heralds and ambassadors as a symbol of their mediating function and as an emblem of their inviolability, and also had a moral value, since it represented honest conduct and at the same time the physical health of the person.
According to some authors, both the rod of Asclepius, with a coiled snake, and the caduceus of Hermes, with two snakes, derive from the ancient method, still in use, of extraction from the subcutaneous tissues of the adult female of Dracunculus medinensis (helminth widespread in many rural regions of Africa and the Middle East); the parasite was delicately wrapped around a stick and the operation, which could last for days, had to be performed by very experienced doctors, so that the worm would not break during extraction.
According to Eastern culture, the caduceus clearly illustrates the basic concept of the subtle body. The swirling ascending energies of the serpents produce a vortex of power which is used in Tantra for personal transformation. The two snakes are associated with the great solar and lunar energies and represent the right and left side of the body. They intersect with each other and continuously cross the Great Central River.
According to a variant of the myth, the Caduceus represented with two coiled snakes is the physical representation of the good and evil of men, kept in balance by the wand of the god Hermes (or Asclepius), who controls their balance. The wings symbolize the primacy of intelligence, which is placed above matter to be able to dominate it through knowledge, in fact Asclepius is considered the greatest physician of antiquity, and Hermes was also known as the god of commerce, therefore both of intelligence extraordinary that stood above all others.
Also according to the myth, the Staff of Asclepius (often confused for the Caduceus) had therapeutic powers, was capable of healing all kinds of diseases.
The Caduceus with two snakes also indicates the power to reconcile opposites, creating harmony between different elements, such as water, fire, earth and air. For this reason it frequently recurs in alchemy, as an indication of the synthesis of sulfur and mercury, as well as in the symbolism of the pharmacopoeia and physical healing.
However, the exact meaning of the caduceus remains unclear. For E. Zolla, the caduceus represented, in ancient times, a laurel branch with which the spring renaissance promoted by the new air of the season was celebrated. The laurel was the plant of Asclepius, as the snake was its animal, and in the caduceus the vegetable and animal world are reunited.
