Description

The Thoth Tarot by Aleister Crowley

The Thoth tarot was painted by Lady Frieda Harris (1877 -1962) under the guidance of the well-known occult scientist Aleister Crowley (1875-1947).

Although Lady Harris knew little about the tarot cards and their meaning, she brought back all the subtleties on painting with great sensitivity. Numerous cards were painted in multiple versions before one was approved by Crowley. More than five years passed before all the cards were created.

The Crowley Thoth tarot was first published in 1969, after the deaths of Crowley and Lady Harris. The present edition was performed with the help of the most modern techniques.

Aleister Crowley’s Tarot of Thoth was his final work, the culmination of a life of occult study and practice. With the artist Lady Frieda Harris, she condensed the core of her teaching into the 78 tarot cards.

Despite the blow this deck sometimes receives (perhaps because it is preceded by the reputation of its infamous creator), for me there is no other deck that provides me with such deep clarity and accurate reading guidance. Although I own and have read many other decks, for the past three years this is the only deck I use for reading.

There is a richness and a complexity that attracts both for its bold beauty and that provokes the same aversion that the eyes feel when they look at the sun. Just as the eyes cannot bear the intense rays of the sun, in my early days of tarot study, I was not yet ready for Thoth.

Each card is filled with a myriad of archetypal symbols, each adding to a potential meaning of the card. The simpler decks with only one main image didn’t work for me because I found their possible interpretations too limiting. But, as I started learning Thoth, I often found myself inexplicably drawn to a certain aspect of the card (a symbol, a color, an image) that would tend to add more specificity or color to the standard meaning of the card. In decks with more direct imagery, such as those in the Osho Zen deck (which I used in reading), I always felt that my readings were too generalized.
