According to Jewish tradition, the Name is so sacred that it cannot be pronounced.
The Halakhah prescribes that during the reading it be replaced with Adonai, and in daily life the term HaShem (“The Name”) be used.

Because ancient Hebrew did not indicate vowels and the Name was not pronounced, the correct vocalization has been lost over time. Some of its component letters may have semi-vowel or even mute value(matres lectionis), making the original pronunciation a mystery still the subject of theological and esoteric study and reflection.
