This sealing of archangels is based on multiple angel systems is a very old tradition that originated in Judaism. In the science of angelology different sources disagree on the names and identities of the Three, Seven or Ten Archangels. Various occult systems associate each archangel with one of the seven traditional luminaries – the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn – and the ten kabbalistic sephiras, but there is disagreement as to which archangel corresponds.

In the “Book of the Watchers”, a section of the Book of Enoch, IX, four angels, Michael, Gabriel, Suriele (= Raphael) and Uriel, “looked down from heaven and saw the much blood that flowed on the earth and all the iniquity that it was done on earth ”by the rebel angels. Since the first cardinal point for the Jews is the East, the four archangels can be placed in correspondence with the cardinal points. The uncertainty of the direction (clockwise or counterclockwise) makes the correspondence of Uriele with the North or with the South and Gabriel with the South or with the North uncertain.
